Internet in the Dominican Republic: Punta Cana and Samaná

The Dominican Republic is two different trips: the resort in Bávaro, where it seems you need nothing, and the one where you rent a car and head to Samaná, Cabarete or Barahona, where the phone becomes essential. In both cases roaming is charged separately by most carriers, and in the second, coverage varies a lot depending on where you are. This guide covers how to arrive connected, where there is genuine signal, and which apps to use.

Your options for getting online

Roaming with your own carrier

The Caribbean sits in the expensive zone of most tariffs: a daily pass with a few hundred megabytes, or pay per megabyte. For a beach week with a couple of excursions it does not add up. Check your specific tariff before flying.

A local SIM from Claro, Altice or Viva

Bought at Punta Cana and Santo Domingo airports, and in shops and colmados across the country. They are cheap and come with data packages that include social media. The usual downsides: paperwork the moment you arrive, taking your own SIM out and keeping it safe, and a top-up process done in cash at the corner shop.

Travel eSIM

You buy the days of the trip, install the QR at home on wifi, and on landing the phone connects to a Dominican network. Your own line stays in the phone with its data off. It is the most convenient option for a one-to-three-week trip, and above all it removes your dependence on hotel wifi.

Real coverage: who covers what, and where it fails

Three networks: Claro, with the widest reach in the country, especially outside the cities; Altice Dominicana, very solid in urban and tourist areas; and Viva, smaller. Travel eSIMs run on one of the big two.

Good coverage with fast 4G: Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana and Bávaro, Bayahibe, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Sosúa, Cabarete, Las Terrenas, Samaná, Jarabacoa and the motorways linking them (including the Coral and the Duarte).

Where it weakens, whichever carrier you are on:

• Cordillera Central: Constanza, the climb up Pico Duarte and the mountain roads between valleys have long stretches with no signal.
• Southwest: Bahía de las Águilas, Jaragua National Park and the road inland from Pedernales.
• Los Haitises: on the boat trip through the mangroves it drops almost immediately.
• Boat trips: to Isla Saona, Cayo Levantado and whale watching in Samaná. Near the coast there is signal, out at sea there is not.
• Secondary inland roads and bateyes: patchy.

The usual, said plainly: the eSIM connects to Claro’s or Altice’s network, it brings none of its own. Where there is no mast, no eSIM works, ours or anyone else’s. If you are heading to the mountains or the southwest, download the map and tell someone your route before leaving.

How much data you need

The Dominican Republic is a destination of maps, WhatsApp, transport and photos, with hotel wifi ranging from excellent to token depending on the place. If you are at an all-inclusive and only go out on excursions, you will use little; if you drive around the island, considerably more.

Installing the eSIM and landing connected

1. Compatibility: dial *#06# and look for the EID; the phone must be carrier-unlocked. List by brand on compatibility.
2. Buy for the days of the trip: validity starts with the first connection in the country.
3. Install at home on wifi. Name it “Dominican”.
4. Lines: your home line for calls and texts with its data off; the eSIM as mobile data with roaming on.
5. On landing: turn off airplane mode and wait to see “Claro” or “Altice”. If nothing happens, airplane mode on/off, and if it persists, go back over step 4.

Apps people use there

• Uber in Santo Domingo, Santiago and the Punta Cana area; it is worth having a local alternative installed too, because availability varies by neighbourhood and by hour.
• Google Maps with the island downloaded. Dominican addresses are given by landmarks (“next to the colmado”), so the map and a pin shared over WhatsApp solve a lot.
• WhatsApp: everything is booked and organised here, from the apartment to the excursion driver. Your own number works fine.
• Caribe Tours and Metro Tours for intercity buses; for short hops, carros públicos and guaguas, where you ask the price before getting in.
• Payments: cards work in hotels, restaurants and supermarkets. For colmados, guaguas, tips and beach stalls, cash in pesos. Tourist areas accept dollars, but the exchange rate they give you rarely works in your favour. Decline the ATM’s currency conversion.

Connectivity tips

• Do not depend on resort wifi: it clogs up in the afternoon, and in many hotels the good connection is the paid one.
• Before a boat trip, download the map, the booking and something to listen to.
• Hurricane season (June to November): power cuts take masts down. Power bank and offline maps.
• Car hire: your phone’s navigation beats any GPS from the rental desk; bring a mount and a car charger.
• Calling home: over WhatsApp. The eSIM is data only.
• If the trip includes Puerto Rico, Cuba or Mexico, a local plan stops at the border: look at a regional one.
